Unemployment Benefits
Before the coronavirus outbreak, workers would receive between $200 and $500 a week, depending on their state. Each state also has a different limit as to how long you can claim unemployment benefits.
The federal stimulus package has both expanded these benefits and increased who is eligible. Now, freelancers, self-employed people, and gig workers are all entitled to benefits. Plus, everyone receives an extra $600 per week for up to four months and unemployment benefits last an additional 13 weeks.
When Will You Receive Your Unemployment Benefits?
Before the pandemic, workers would typically wait two to three weeks after making their claim to receive benefits, but it is taking time for states to roll out the new benefits. New York has already adopted new measures, which is helping residents at the epicenter of the outbreak, and other states are sure to follow soon. The good news is that most states have now waived the one-week waiting period for benefits.
Although it may take a while to receive your unemployment benefits, you’ll likely receive the full amount retroactively. The process for filing may be stressful and complicated, but it’s worthwhile starting as soon as possible to get to the front of the line — especially when you consider how many people will be applying in the coming weeks.
