Green Hills Grocery - The history
It all started in the early 1950s when two brothers had a vision. Jimmy and Kenny Johnson wanted to build a supermarket that offered quality, service, and value to the people of St. Joseph. The first store was built on 22nd Street in St. Joseph and was named Green Hills. After a while, more stores were built in and around St. Joseph. In 1970, the two brothers sold their stores to the Fleming Company, which was in the wholesale grocery business at the time. The Green Hills stores were owned by Fleming until 1977.
The chain grew over the years. A significant moment occurred in November 2016 when Matt and Jeff Heitman purchased the newest location at 7014 King Hill Ave. so that customers from all parts of our community could conveniently shop at Green Hills.
Green Hills is a full-service supermarket offering a full line of groceries, fresh meat, farm-fresh produce, frozen foods, fresh dairy, deli, bakery, liquor, wine, and beer. Green Hills and its staff focus on excellent customer service and continue to offer carry-out service to all customers.
