Kmart - The history

In 1962, Kmart was established in Michigan under executive Harry B. Cunningham. Within one year, Kmart was flourishing enough to be able to open seventeen more stores and earning approximately half a billion U.S. dollars in sales. As at 1977 a considerable percentage of sales, 95% to be exact, of the S.S. Kresge Company were generated by Kmart, which led to the official name change of the company to the Kmart Corporation. In the year 1991, Kmart established its first Supercenter in Medina, Ohio. The supercenter provides not only general Kmart merchandise but also a full grocery that was open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The supercenters are mostly somewhere between 140,000 to 190,000 square feet in size. The grocery department carries fresh produce, dairy, seafood, meats/poultry, and baked goods. They also have a video store, garden centers, portrait stores, a local bank branch, pharmacy, tax center, deli/cafe, Little Ceasers and sometimes an arcade. The supercenter seems to be more successful in locations where there is an inadequate Walmart presence, such as in Michigan and Ohio.
