Coronavirus tip: Washing groceries is a good idea, generally

Leave your stock outside. When stocking up on items you won't be using within the next couple of days, it's always a good idea to leave them outside. It doesn't have to be your garden or porch, of course, just a place where you won't come into contact with such items for the next 2-3 days. After such a period you can expect that even if the coronavirus was present, it won't have survived. These products are now safe for use. A thing to remember: do not leave any fridge products out, they have to be kept in the cold.

Find a clean space to unpack. When bringing your shopping indoors, find a flat space that you will consider clean (as per CDC guidelines, wiping it with any home disinfectant will do). This is where you should put all items when they are considered safe to touch with your bare hands.

Remove unnecessary packaging. Some items, like cereals, pastas or even beer can be wrapped in multiple layer packaging. Remove the outer layer before putting these items into your clean space. Other items are packed in single-layer wrap, but can easily be stored in sealed home packaging. These items include bread, sealed produce, etc. Any outer packaging that may go should be removed. This also includes single-use bags you bring from the store. It may not be ecological, but safety should come first – these bags come from checkout desks that may be a hub for the virus.
