Guide to safe shopping during the coronavirus pandemic

Plan your trip well

With new opening hours and operating modes in mind, you should try and do the shopping at off-peak hours, minimising contact with others. Imagine your route from the car to the store. Make a list of products before leaving and map the store to know where the items are. This will help you avoid all unnecessary actions and make shopping much faster.

Keeping track of what you touch is extremely important. Avoid picking the ripest produce, rather select specific items with your eyes and then pick them up. Since it's often impossible to avoid touching carts, fridge handles or other frequently-touched elements, store employees are taking extra time to clean them. But having your own wipe of sanitiser is always a good idea. It's also highly encouraged to wear a face mask while shopping, this reduces emission of droplets that we exhale when talking or breathing.

Remember to keep a safe distance from others (the CDC suggest 6 feet) both in the isles and at checkout. The cashier might not pack your products, especially if you bring a reusable bag from home. Wearing disposable gloves might be helpful particularly for those with a habit of touching their face, as we tend not to do it when gloved. And avoiding contact with one's face during shopping is crusial, at least until you return home and wash your hands thoroughly. And yes, you should wash them again after unpacking your groceries. Rinsing produce with water is also a good idea, as is removing all unnecessary packaging as part of your unpacking routine.
