The Container Store - The history

The originators of the Container Store, Garrett Boone, and Kip Tindell met while working in the paint department of Montgomery Ward. The container store was opened in a small retail space located in Dallas on July 1, 1978. Tindell, Garrett Boone, and architect John Mullen opened the first retail store offering a mix of different products devoted to helping people make their lives easier. In doing so, a new category of retailing was originated. The initial company capital was raised by Garrett, his father, and John Mullen, who were the pioneer directors, officers, and shareholders of the company. The company bought one of its leading suppliers, Elfa International, a Swedish corporation that specialized in shelving and storage units in the year 1999.

In April 1991, the store opened its first location outside Texas in Atlanta, Georgia. As at December 1998, the chain had expanded to 18 stores in operation. Its first New York metropolitan area store opened in Oct. 2000. As of Nov. 2004, it had 33 locations and increased to 38 with the opening of its first Los Angeles area Location in Oct. 2006.

In July 2007, following the deal it had with Leonard Green & Partners, the company announced its plan to open 29 more stores within the next five years. The first Arkansas location began in March 2008, followed by its first Arizona location in the summer. In addition, the first Minnesota location and second Ohio location was open the same year during fall.
