Smart and Final – The history
Smart & Final was founded in 1871 in Los Angeles by Herman W. Hellman, Jacob Haas, and Bernard Cohn, as Hellman-Haas Grocery Co. At the very beginning, the company sold only the most needed articles such as flour, sugar, salt, medicines, sheepherding supplies, chewing tobacco and gunpowder.
The store was so important at that time that Hellman, Haas was one of seven names in the first Los Angeles phone directory!
Now, the company is over 140 years on the market and it combines innovative technologies and management practices with the historical perspective of one of the West's pioneer companies.
Currently, there are over 300 stores in the Western United States and 15 in northwestern Mexico.
