Pet Supplies Plus - The history
Jack Berry and Harry Shallop, in Redford, Michigan, established Pet Supplies Plus Plus in 1988. Their store was designed according to the grocery stores pattern; it was the first pet shop with wide aisles and neat well-stocked display shelves. The stores highlighted overhead signs, convenient hours, every day low prices, large parking lots, and helpful staff on the corridors.
Due to the success achieved, the founders opened new stores in 30 more locations within five years of opening the first store. A third party, named Harvey Solway joined the two founders lot long after. A private equity group known as Irving Place Capital bought the company in September 2010. Day-to-day operations continue to be run by the management team in place before the sale, and the company's top managers continue to own a share in the company, while several of the stores are autonomously held franchised sites.
The company has over 400 stores in 31 states, principally in the eastern half of the United States in As of mid-2017.
Most of the stores are positioned in very convenient high-traffic sites with large parking lots. Pet Supplies Plus Plus stores in smaller cities have between 5,000 and 6,000 square feet while those in areas that are more extensive can have up to 9,000 square feet. The limited square footage, as compared to general retail "big-box" store, gives the benefit of a better distribution system, and takes down costs. Recently, several Pet Supplies Plus Plus stores have added self-serve dog washes and grooming centers to their places as a customer convenience.
Pets are permitted to walk through the aisles of the Pet Supplies Plus Plus stores. The store provides chew toys, treats, and other such products that are placed on low shelves making it possible for dogs to reach them.
