Ocean State Job Lot - The history
In 1977, Ocean State Job Lot was established by Marc and Alan Perlman and opened their first store for business in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. Ocean State Job Lot started the company with the idea that people work hard for their money, so if they can help them stretch their dollars by saving them money, we’ll be successful. Since then Ocean State Job Lot has gone from one store to 131, and have expanded their reach well beyond the Ocean State, operating stores in all of New York, New England, and New Jersey.
The company started out with three people selling an eclectic assortment of merchandise at flea markets in the Northeast. Now, they have over 5,000 associates and recognized by Forbes as one of America's Best Midsize Employers. They are good at what we do, and their customers appreciate the values they can find in the stores. It’s been working for 40 years. It’s working today. And they are only going to keep getting better at it.
