Meijer - The history

Founded during the Great Depression by a Dutch immigrant, Hendrik Meijer, in Greenville, Michigan. Meijer was interested in studying the customer needs and after careful evaluation of the trends in the grocery industry, he introduced self-service shopping and shopping was the first. Meijer got huge success this saw the expansion Meijer stores in Ionia and Cedar Springs.

In 1949, two additional stores were opened in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Their success continued growing and by 1960 they had expanded to 2 dozens stores in Michigan. Hendrik Meijer the founder and the president, died in 1964 which lead to his son Fred Meijer taking over as the president.

Currently, Meijer considered as one of the biggest hypermarkets in the country, as it combines both groceries and departmental stores. According to a published article in 2013 on Forbes, Meijer is named as one of the top 20 Private Companies.
