IGA - The history
IGA is an abbreviation of The Independent Grocers Alliance. It's a US brand of grocery stores that was founded in 1926. It's headquarter is based in Chicago, Illinois. The idea to start a business was to gather independent grocery stores across the country to ensure that the trusted, family-owned local shops will remain strong in the face of growing chain competition. It has started from only a 100 independent retailers, but by the end of its first year, the group had expanded to over 150 wholesalers. In 1930, there were over 8,000 grocery stores using the IGA name.
Currently, IGA operates in more than 30 countries. The chain operates as a franchise through stores that are owned separately from the brand and are mostly managed by the families in their local towns.
