Farm Fresh - The history

The history of Farm Fresh goes back to 1957 when it was founded by David Furman in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach urban area. The catchy name was chosen by a local community, which was always strongly committed in development of the company.

In 1986 Farm Fresh has merged with it's largest competitor Giant Open Air Markets, which strengthen the company with 26 grocery stores and 43 smaller convenience stores. Quick and big expansions quickly allowed the company to purchase another chain of stores, called Lou Smith Supermarkets.

Unfortunately by 1997, Farm Fresh was struggling with rather large financial problems, which led to company's bankruptcy.

Only a year later the chain of stores was purchased by Richfood Holdings, Inc., which kept the Farm Fresh's doors open for longer.

In 1999 Richfood Holdings was bought by SuperValu Inc.

After all the changes in ownership and management Fresh Food is no longer run by a person who, like at the beginning, would be closely involved in local community's life.

In March 2018 decision of SuperValu Inc., about selling 21 of 38 now called Farm Fresh Food & Pharmacy stores to Kroger Co., hit the news. The plan, for now, is to keep the name and the most popular items which were always popular in the stores, like fried chicken.
