Fareway - The history
On may 12, 1938, the first Fareway Store opened for business at 624 Story Street in Boone, Iowa.
Fareway is a revolutionary self-service grocery store that allows shoppers to pick out groceries in their store rather than submitting a list to a worker that will package everything for them.
Shopping carts were a novelty, referred to as "rubber-tired gliders" that carried shopping baskets.
Paul S. Beckwith who has worked in the meat department of different grocery chain for years noticed a shift from a focus on buyer service to economics and financial motives. Beckwith partnered with Fred E. Vitt with the intention to take grocery shopping back to how he knew it, creating a market to keep customers and employees happy.
Beckwith was named Vice President of the Fareway operation and manager of the Boone store. Due to the Boone store success, the company rapidly opened a headquarters and five more stores.
The name Fareway was coined from the word "fare" which means a wide range of stock of foods. Also, fairness, adequately compensating employees so that their service is up to par with the prices, ensuring the happiness of everyone involved is another meaning to the name.
Fareway is one of the biggest employers in Iowa and has opened stores across the Midwest including Minnesota, Nebraska, Illinois and South Dakota.
