Aldi - The history
Established in 1946 by two brothers, Karl and Theo Albrecht. The two brothers had a vision of growing their mother’s store into one of the most successful businesses in the country. By 1950, the two brothers had opened 13 other stores in Ruhr Valley.
However, due to a dispute between the two, of whether to sell cigarettes or not, the company was split into 2, Aldi Nord and Aldi Surd. At that time they were making 90Million in revenue. Although two different legal entities, the two were jointly owned and managed by the both of them. Their split did not stop them from opening over 10000 different stores in 20 different countries.
In 1993, both brothers retired as CEOs and left the company in the hands of private family foundations, the Siepmann Foundations, and Markus Foundation. Siepmann Foundation runs the Aldi Sud while the Markus Foundation runs the Aldi Nord.
