Shaw's - The history
It all started in 1860 when George C. Shaw opened a small teashop in Portland, Maine. At the same time, Maynard A. Davis launched a group of small downtown grocery stores in Brockton and New Bedford, Massachusetts which was called Brockton Public Market (BPM) food retailers. Many years later, in 1919, Davis bought the George C. Shaw Company and made it a subsidiary of BPM.
Now, Shaw's is one of two American grocery store chains that is under united management, based in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts. Under the Shaw's banner, there are currently 133 stores in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
Star Market is a companion store to Shaw's. Shaw's bought a competitive chain in 1999. The combined chain has currently the largest group of stores in New England.
