Hobby Lobby - The history
In 1972, David Green established the first Hobby Lobby store in a 300-square-foot space in Northwest Oklahoma City. In August to the year-end, the store had made retail sales of #3200. In January 1973, he moved to a bigger 1,000 square foot space. In addition, in 1975, Green left his supervision position with variety store TG&Y to open a new Hobby Lobby in Oklahoma City, and another store was opened in Tulsa, Oklahoma the following year. As at 1982, it has increased to seven stores and opened the first store outside Oklahoma in 1984.
The chain had approximately 15 stores by the start of 1989. As at late 1992, it has developed to 50 locations in seven American states, and its expansion continued to accelerate. In August 1995 its 100th store was established, and its 200th 1999. That number had increased to 281 stores in 24 states by March 2002, and 310 as at October 2003.
The chain has not less than 800 stores nationwide with the headquarters building in a 3,400,000-square-foot distributing, manufacturing, and office complex.
