Foodland - The history
In 1948, Maurice J. "Sully" Sullivan, an Irish immigrant and See Goo Lau, formed Foodland Supermarket Ltd in Honolulu's Market City. Maurice came to the USA at the very tender age of 17 years. During that time he worked as a potato sacker at A&P tea company in Pennsylvania. He was promoted to be a Store Manager in New York.
He enlisted into the army and in 1946 he was discharged and lived in Hawaii. There he worked as a store manager for the Lau family in their Lanikai store. After working for two years, he saw the need of having a supermarket to provide the essential products to the people of Hawaii. Together with See Goo Lau, they opened up the first supermarket in Hawaii.
Over the years, Foodland Supermarket grew in popularity and this saw the opening of a number of Foodland Supermarket stores. What started out as a small supermarket is the biggest chain store supermarket in Hawaii has now opened up to 32 different stores countrywide. Foodland is a family owned company, Sully left his daughter Jenai Sullivan Wall as the President in 1995 and CEO in 1998.
