Cub Foods - The history

Cub Foods is another successful supermarket chain in the United States operating in the states of Minnesota and Illinois. This is a chain of 77 stores owned by Minnesota-based SuperValu Inc.

Cub Foods was founded by Minnesota-based Hooleys Supermarkets in 1968 in Stillwater by brothers Charles and Jack Hooley, brother-in-law Robert Thueson, and Culver Davis, Jr. Originally, the name "Cub" stood for Consumers United for Buying.

The company was bought by SuperValu in 1980 and at that time, the chain grew to 83 stores in three states.

Cub Foods was one of the first total discount food stores in the US.

The store was very famous for being “no frills; sack your own groceries ...”
